  12. DESCRIPTION
  13.        ircd is the server (daemon) program for the Internet Relay
  14.        Chat Program.  The ircd is a server in that  its  function
  15.        is  to "serve" the client program irc(1) with messages and
  16.        commands.  All  commands  and  user  messages  are  passed
  17.        directly  to the ircd for processing and relaying to other
  18.        ircd sites.  The irc(1) program depends upon  there  being
  19.        an  ircd  server  running  somewhere (either on your local
  20.        UNIX site or a remote ircd site)  so  that  it  will  have
  21.        somewhere  to  connect to and thus allow the user to begin
  22.        talking to other users.
